We are a global investment expert in the development, acquisition and management of infrastructure projects from their conception, structuring and construction through to their long-term operating phase.

Our Business

Our track record dates back around 20 years to a time when we made our first investment in infrastructure. Our investment capabilities extend across the spectrum from financing and building new ‘greenfield’ infrastructure (also known as development infrastructure) to buying and managing ‘‘brownfield’ operational infrastructure assets with long, predictable income streams (secondary infrastructure).

Today we are one of the world’s largest managers of social and transportation infrastructure projects, with investments over 180 projects across our business. We have a long and successful track record investing in low carbon generation and renewable energy infrastructure projects, including wind farms and solar parks, as well as energy enabling infrastructure such as standby generation.

Our reputation for market leadership and innovation was further enhanced when we launched HICL Infrastructure Company Limited (HICL), the first infrastructure investment company to list on the London Stock Exchange in 2006. In 2013 we also listed The Renewables Infrastructure Group (TRIG), the UK’s largest listed renewables infrastructure investment company, and at the end of 2015 InfraRed became the first manager of two listed infrastructure funds (HICL and TRIG) in the FTSE 250 index.

Our Approach

We identify and work with partners across the world to deliver and manage infrastructure projects and we draw upon our experienced international team with a diverse range of expertise, including project and corporate finance, legal and engineering.

Whether we develop new greenfield projects or acquire operational brownfield investments, we always focus on the viability and sustainability of the assets. We only invest in projects which are sound and fit for purpose in Europe, North and South America, Australasia and, on a selective basis, in emerging economies where a robust and enforceable legal system is in place. We always ensure our investments are underpinned by a strong contractual framework which ties in and aligns the interests of all stakeholders with the highest standard of corporate governance, in line with our ESG policy.

In relation to development projects, our approach is to source opportunities commissioned by governments or directly sourced from the market using partnerships or joint venture vehicles. We have built relationships with the best sector participants over a long period of time and only partner with experienced and respected contracting groups which are aligned with our own strategy of creating real value. Our aim is to create stable and resilient cash flows by investing in assets or companies with contracted or mitigated revenue risk using proven commercial technologies in established sectors.

Our ability to leverage off our development infrastructure expertise has enabled us to grow a considerable portfolio of operational infrastructure investments in the brownfield, income-generating assets in a wide variety of markets, including renewable energy generation, social infrastructure, regulated assets and transportation. Our aim is to purchase and manage investments which deliver the quality of service that the users of the asset expect from us and which can preserve (and possibly enhance) value for our investors. We achieve this through active asset and portfolio management and engagement with clients, key stakeholders and supply chain contractors.

We are seeking further investment opportunities and prefer investments with immediate cash yields and limited revenue risks; however we will consider projects still under construction or in the ramp-up phases. We are also looking for further operational renewable energy generation investments in Europe and North America.

Our Investments

With over US$8bn of equity managed in projects internationally, we have a comprehensive understanding of how to structure and operate high quality projects which support their community and are able to provide essential services to users. We understand the risks and the potential benefits for investors from developing and operating long-term infrastructure assets.

We have successfully raised and invested four development infrastructure funds which have invested in over 80 infrastructure projects globally (of which more than 50 have already successfully reached their operational phase) across social, transportation and renewable energy sectors including the A63 Motorway in France and the national Sports Hub stadium in Singapore. We are actively seeking further investments in development or expansion projects. Currently, we manage a portfolio of over 180 yielding infrastructure investments via three long-term infrastructure vehicles:

  1. HICL (or “HICL Infrastructure Company Limited”), which was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2006 and is one of the largest listed investment companies in Europe focused predominantly on operational social and transportation infrastructure. It is recognised as a leader in its market

  2. A long term yielding unlisted private partnership created in December 2012 with a seeded portfolio of operational PPP assets developed by InfraRed

  3. TRIG (or “The Renewables Infrastructure Group”), which was listed on the London Stock Exchange in July 2013 and which has a portfolio of over 50 investments in operational onshore wind and solar energy generation assets in the UK, France and Ireland.
