Oasis Academy, Croydon

Student power

Oasis Academy is part of the Oasis Multi-Academy Trust, which provides education for c.1,625 pupils aged 3–18. Our relationship with the school dates back to 2004, when we invested in a 30-year concession for the design, construction, financing and operation of the secondary school and local community library. The school now forms part of the HICL portfolio.

So it was a pleasure to support this wonderful science-based project for 30 students aged between 12 and 13.

Working in five teams, the students were asked to present a proposal for renewable technology. The challenge simulated a real-life workplace scenario, allowing them to demonstrate their research, analysis and presentation skills to the full – all supported by InfraRed mentors.

In assessing the risks and benefits of their respective propositions, the teams learned about renewable energy before making their case for investment.

The project kicked-off with an inspirational site visit, followed by a series of hands-on workshops that offered a perfect introduction to the world of renewables.

The teams also met their InfraRed mentors, on hand to provide ongoing support and guidance throughout the next six weeks. During this time InfraRed also ran three teach-ins at the school to supplement the teams’ learning and development.

The students and their teachers were then welcomed to our offices to present their ideas to a panel of InfraRed judges, with the winners selected on their resourceful research, compelling business case and strong presentation.

“We really welcome the partnership we are developing with InfraRed. Real-life, enriching experiences like this give our students an invaluable insight into the opportunities that are out there and inspire them to achieve.” Louise Lee
