Oasis Academy, Croydon

InfraRed has partnered with Oasis Academy, Shirley Park, Croydon, in a science-based project aimed at giving 30 students, aged between 12 and 13, a chance to put their skills to the test.

Oasis Academy is part of Oasis Multi-Academy Trust, providing education for c.1,625 pupils aged 3–18. InfraRed’s relationship with the school goes back to 2004 when we first invested in a 30-year concession for the design, construction, financing and operation of the secondary school and community library in Croydon. The school now forms part of the HICL portfolio.

Working in five teams, the students were given the task to present a renewable technology proposal. The challenge, which simulated a real-life workplace scenario, required the students to demonstrate their research, analysis and presentation skills. In the process they learned about renewable energy and assessed the risks and benefits of their respective propositions, ultimately making a case for investment to an InfraRed panel of judges.

This was an amazing experience. Not only did I learn more about renewables, but also how to work as part of a team. Thank you.

The project kicked-off with an inspirational site visit where the teams were treated to a series of hands-on workshops that offered a great introduction to the world of renewables.

The teams also met their InfraRed mentors who provided ongoing support and guidance through the following six weeks as the teams got to grips with their individual assignments. During this period InfraRed ran three teach-ins at the school to further supplement the teams’ learning and development.

Thanks for the pizza!

The culmination of the project saw InfraRed host the students and their teachers at its offices as the teams presented their results to a panel of InfraRed judges who selected the winning team based on their resourceful research, compelling business case and strong presentation.

We really welcome the partnership we are developing with InfraRed. Real-life, enriching experiences like this give our students an invaluable insight into the opportunities that are out there and inspire them to achieve.
